The Hercules Fire Station Project
-The Project-
The project was designed to up-skill 70 young people in the collation, care and delivery of their local heritage, looking at social heritage.
During the 14-month project young people from the area of Moss Side came together to research and investigate the heritage of Moss Side Boxing Club, and the impact it has had on the people in the community. Giving young people an opportunity to reflect and investigate their current physical and social environment from the standpoint of Moss Side Boxing Club . This reflection will help young people have a better understanding about their community history, and a better understanding of themselves- this is proved to lead to improved social cohesion.
Through the collection of oral history, artefacts and using the medium of drama, digital documentary and investigation into artefacts they have better understood and learned to interpret and share their heritage from their unique perspective.
This project offered young people from this area the opportunity to develop new skills and experiences, using heritage that they have expressed an interest in, including script development, music and drama, visual content collation and youth participant interviews for documentary film.
As well as participating in a documentary along those who run the Moss Side Boxing Club, the young people also participated in the performance of a play that was based on expressing their experiences throughout the project and what they learned from the community leaders involved in the boxing club.
